Wesley Hughes (Best Friend)
Daniel Abbot, usually called Dan or Danny, is one of the Warbler boys living in Hanover House. He is described as a cheerful, easily excited Junior, with sandy brown hair and green eyes. Danny is seen at Justin's wing along with Spencer Willis, and rather hyperactive to a degree. It has been said that he is being groomed for prefect duty after Justin and Spencer graduate from Dalton Academy.
The side-canon Freshman Orientation shows that as a freshman, he was friends with Wesley Hughes, before the latter's transfer to Windsor House. They do, presumably, continue to remain good friends nevertheless.
It has been recently revealed that Danny is a recovering self-harmer. His wrists bear some scars, but over them, the word "Courage" is now written, done at the suggestion of his friend Wes, who was the first to discover Danny's problem.
In Hell Night (Chapter 26) Danny is seen as being friendly towards Adam as they were assigned as school buddies. He thought Adam was a bit odd but pushed those thoughts away as he thought they'd be rooming together soon so he ought to be nice. Danny is also shown telling Adam that he can come to them about anything, and that Danny would be happy to share a room with him. He was set to move in straight after Parent's Night.
The other boys are shown as respecting him as he is to be prefect the following year. Danny is later seen talking about Merril happily, helping explain to Kurt who Merril was, explaining that she is like their mother. Danny is also a big help when Logan was given the wrong pills, and helped the boys decide what to do with the Stuart Prefect.
Danny was assigned by Justin to follow Adam around during Parent's Night, but Adam took the chance to leave as Danny was a Warbler and had to perform. Danny later realised this and ran to find Adam, who he found dragging Julian along the ground. Despite Julian screaming at him to run, Danny tried to negotiate with Adam, before lunging at him and trying to grab the knife.
Danny was stabbed in his collarbone but kept going, only to get stabbed again, this time in his side. Danny was then beaten by Adam where he played dead, waiting for Adam and Julian to leave before running into Dwight, telling him where they were headed, then ran to get help from the others, where he later blacked out.
In Blackout (Chapter 27) Danny was seen giving a statement to the police, although the room was crowded by other Hanovers. He had been given morphine and was still pale and bleeding. Later, he was at Harvey's funeral, where he began to cry when he lay down a carnation on the casket. He was comforted by Wes.
Danny did not like to sleep on a pillow. He liked just curling up on a level surface. ANY level surface. He will sleep anywhere soft.
As a baby, Danny was sickly. He cried a lot, because he caught one baby bug after another. He was pretty bright and friendly when not sick.
Danny's early childhood was happy, and his parents did want and love him. But then that love ran out. Danny heard them fight often enough--the kind of fight where they start off trying to pretend they don't want the child to hear, but they get so heated it gets loud anyway. He would stay very still in his room and hum and sing to himself to ignore the noise... A parent would come in sometime after the quiet, check if he's okay, and he'd say he was because he was worried they'd get angry again... Eventually, they stopped checking on him altogether.
Danny's parents don't know his eye color. In the mountains of divorce and school paperwork, Danny's dad put in Danny's eye-color as brown. His mom said blue. They're actually green. They used to know but after all the conflict and problems, their memories became skewed.

Danny wants to focus on his swimming, or music.
When Danny gets sick (like a cold), Merril cuddles him and puts a blanket around him and looks after him like a mommy.
A few people outside Hanover (besides Wes) know about his self harm.
Danny likes to read Laura Joh Rowland books.
Danny once met Michael Phelps. He completely restrained his fanboying until he managed to get well away and he ran around, found Wes, and screamed into his face. Surprisingly, Wes just kind of blinked and calmly said, “Michael Phelps?” And Danny nodded.
He uses a messenger bag.
He’s not taking over family business because nothing is expected of him. His parents are both corporate people.
Danny likes girls with a sense of humor.
His college fund - which he earned all himself - was used for his hospital treatment. He's going to have to find a scholorship to get into university now.
Danny'll still be able to swim. He has to make sure not to overstrain for a while, though. Which means regionals for swimming is out of the question for him.

When Danny was compared to Michael Phelps, he yelled out, "Blasphemy!!"
When all the boys got together to read scary stories to each other, Justin and Danny look like they're enjoying themselves.
Justin taught Danny how to braid hair. So he could help Merril braid her hair before she went to sleep.
Danny sleeps with a Nemo plushie that was given to him. He uses it like a pillow for when he needs a travel-pillow or something.
Justin and Danny: "Yes, Danny, I'll help you pick your first car. No, you can't put nitro in it." "You've been hanging around Wesley too much, Dan." "It was his suggestion!" "Obviously."
It takes a lot for Danny to get angry.

On His Self Harming
See…I used to have a lot of friends, I’ve got good grades, my parents are very successful, I can sing well… you know…everything that’s supposed to make things perfect. …thing is…it just wasn’t. I had lots of friends, but they didn’t know me. I’ve got good grades but that was because I’m actually really bad at academics and I stay up until two am everyday poring over books just to make sure everything right. My parents are successful but they’re always fighting because my dad’s cheating on my mom. They want a divorce. Guess what—neither of them want me. (hollow laugh)
I was really perfect on the outside but…I was just rotting away inside. I was always tired mentally and emotionally and all my other friends didn’t know me well enough to help. I felt really…really alone. And if my own parents didn’t want me, I figured who else in the world would? That’s kind of when it started.
After I moved to Dalton, things changed a little. And Wes noticed my weird habits and began to talk to me. I guess he told Justin, because the next thing I knew, I had a party all for me, for literally no reason. And everyone took turns telling me why I would be missed if something happened to me, because I was family now, I was one of them. I think I was crying the whole time but after that I was okay.
It was sophomore year when Wes told me to write that word on my wrist, but the truth is, after meeting everyone here and having them know every bit of me…even the parts I thought I should be ashamed of…I didn’t need to. (smile)
All boys and some girls had a jousting competition. Everyone rode a horse, and used an eleven-foot log to try and knock off their opponents. The houses Windsor, Stuart, Hanover and Lancaster have agreed that whichever house "wins" will be served by all the other houses in a big cookout. Danny is jousting for House of Hanover. Danny was facing Lucy from House of Westwood. Lucy struck her lance right into Danny’s shield, sending splinters flying. Danny had thrown his head back to avoid the splinters and struck at Lucy’s unshielded chest. Danny was pushed back but Lucy was flung sideways off the horse, making Danny the winner.
For round two, he was up against Charlie from Windsor. He was scared but determined. When the flag dropped, Charlie’s lance connected and imploded into Danny’s breastplate and Danny was thrown backwards. Danny’s lance scraped Charlie’s shield and broke. Charlie stayed on his horse. Danny was slumped over, but also stayed on the horse. When he got back to his side, he slid off the horse and hit the ground. He was struggling against Justin and he couldn’t breathe so they had to take his armor off. He had a huge bruise and Justin had to coax him to breathe.
Danny said everything hurt then pointed to his shoulder. Justin notice a splinter had gone through the armor into his arm. Danny asked if they could just yank it out then let him go back for round two. When Justin said it wasn’t that deep, Danny yanked it out himself then asked to be patched up. He mounted the horse again and rode off. When the flag dropped, Danny drove his lance at Charlie but it hit the other lance and shattered. Charlie’s blunted lance struck Danny’s shoulder. Danny tipped over and he and his horse crashed into the centre rail.
He hit the ground and lay still, the horse trotting off. He was unconscious when the others ran to him, and they said he hit his head. He came to a moment later and asked what happened. Everyone relaxed then carried him off.
No House in Dalton allows a wandering Danny solitude. When he is spotted, boys often go up to him and chat him up or invite him to things.
Danny is a workaholic when it comes to grades.
Danny has been tasked as Oliver's "school buddy", as well as offered to be his roommate, but Oliver doesn't wish to intrude.
Danny led the Warblers into Breakeven.
Danny got invited to be a part of a group of swimmers who are potentials for a competitive National team.
There will be a showdown of rock proportions. Haven vs. the Kings. The Kings are Dalton students. It was all Clay's idea. Clay's been going around recruiting. He's roped in Bailey, and the Windsors ganged up to make Dwight represent. Clay's still out terrorizing other houses for members. Hanover volunteered Danny and Jeff.
Because Danny was a sickly child, Merril suspects that his standard, "I'm okay, I feel fine." whenever she finds him sick, is because he always suffered silently through his illnesses in fear that his parents would get angry.
Wes went to see Danny in the hospital when they were both in there after Hell Night.
Spencer once brought Merril a bunch of flowers so big it was larger than him. He said "I do what it takes for my girl!" and then said Merril can put it anywhere she liked. Danny however took one look at the petals on the floor, and panicked because of the flashback it gave him so Justin yelled at Spencer.
If Danny could choose to never feel lonely again, but in return he would have to give up the year that Wes saved his life, he'd choose to never feel lonely again because he's sure it'll involve Wes anyway.
Wes is always prepared to get calls in the middle of the night and come running if needed. Especially if it's David or Danny.
Justin and the rest of Hanover think it's a perfectly good idea to replace their salt shaker with a sprinkle grinder. When threatened that Merril will know, Spencer reasoned that, "This is a minor issue, we don't need to consult her for something as minor as that...right? RIGHT GUYS?" in which Jeff and Danny agreed and since Justin was the prefect, it was his choice.
Danny is a 10/10 perfect snuggler.
Spencer told Merril that since chocolate comes from cocoa, which is from a tree that's a plant, chocolate is therefor a salad. Spencer and Merril are no longer talking much to Danny's amusement.
When He Knew He Wasn't Alone
(smiles) That’s easy. That time, when Hanover threw this huge party. I walked in and I was with them and then after a while I asked Justin what the party was about. Half the room laughed. Then they all smiled at me and told me that it was for me. Just because they could. :) They just said it like that, like it was the most normal thing in the world. I think that…was the moment.
Self Harming At Dalton
(long consideration) Once or twice…but that was very early on. Fortunately, it got curbed by the people around me. (smiles) …I owe Wes big time. Because he was my roommate. He…I guess he basically was the one who blew the whistle on me, and got the whole process started.
At The Beach
"Seriously," Wes glowered at the younger boy. "We're at a beach. You're from Florida. Shouldn't you be out there enjoying it instead of hunkering down in the shade like that?!"
Dwight raised his eyes slightly from the massive leatherbound book he was reading. His dark glasses hung low at the bridge of his nose it was already half-coated with the remarkable amounts of sunblock he had slathered on himself and his face. "No."
"We're not here to hunt, we're here to enjoy vacation," Blaine clipped Dwight's elbow, but made a face when he found it equally coated in sunblock. "Are you *marinading* yourself in coppertone--?"
"Sand gets everywhere, it's too hot, when you get in the water it'll be too cold, the water's all salty--"
"You *like* salt! You throw salt everywhere on a day to day basis! You *brought salt here*!!" David gestured wildly to the bag of salt at Dwight's feet.
"I don't wanna go swimming and you can't make me!!" Dwight all but yelled when Wes and Blaine grabbed his wrists and tried to drag him off the beach mat and out of the shade of the gigantic umbrella. Fortunately for Dwight, all that coppertone had the distinct advantage of making him impossible to get a hold off--his hands slipped out of Wes and Blaine's grips and sent the older boys tumbling into the sand.
"Oh for crying out loud, leave him alone," Charlie finally piped up from under the other beach umbrella nearby. "At least he's being quiet and not digging for buried treasure or something."
"I would never be so careless," Dwight retorted indignantly. "That could release all kinds of piratical curses. If I was going to do that, I'd--"
"Never*mind*, Dwight..." David sighed, giving up. He looked up and caught a frisbee from the Twins and then laughed. "Come on, you guys, let's go."
"Stay hydrated," Blaine told him as he went with Wes and David to join the game with the Twins.
Reed chirupped happily as Dwight sat back down with a grumble, picking up the book. He and Spencer were nearby and they were constructing a massive sand castle with alarming detail. "Dwight, you're good with castles right?" Reed asked him. "What do you think we should add?"
"And don't say a moat," Spencer mumbled. He jerked his thumb to where his sister and some Dobry girls were playing volleyball, surrounded by a crowd of very attentive Dalton boys. "Or a cannonade. My sister only cares about defending during a seige."
"You don't have those windows for the archers," Dwight replied after a quick glance at the structure.
"Damn it!" Charlie got up at last when he saw the Stuarts throw an entire cooler full of ice water onto the unsuspecting Tipton brothers, with Logan just smirking as he watched, Julian leaning onto him and barely able to keep standing with his laughter. Charlie pitched a beach sandal at Justin, who was watching the volleyball game.
Justin dodged with mastery earned by practice. "What do we have to sort out now?" he asked.
"Hurry up before--!" Charlie winced as there was a howl from the Stuarts as the Twins hurled a coleman's worth of *actual* ice at them in retaliation. "That!! Come on."
The two prefects headed off to take control of impending mess. After a few moments, they were doing a fairly good job at keeping things under control--Windsor and Stuart battles escalate very quickly--and things had just begun to cool down when Dwight happened to glance up to the water.
Merril, who was nearby and setting out a picnic lunch, noticed the younger boy go perfectly still. "Dwight? Something wrong?"
Dwight practically threw aside the book and he pulled his sunglasses off, staring into the water, his entire body tense with attention. "Oh my god." He instantly rose. "Danny."
Danny, who was kneeling next to Merril, looked up. "What?" He looked to where Dwight was looking. For a moment he seemed to search, and then also grew pale. Puzzled, Reed tried to see what they were looking at, but the waters looked like the normal beach scene.
"Danny," Dwight said again, never looking away, but already reaching for gear. Danny was at his side instantly, also staring.
"Oh my god, how long--"
"I looked up ten seconds ago--go!!"
The last word wasn't necessary, Danny was already running to the water at a sprint. Reed and Spencer got up, alarmed. "What's going on?!" Merril asked, frightened.
Danny leapt into the water and speared it cleanly--he was swimming nowm and the people around them looked startled. On the sand, Dwight bolted off past the dumbfounded Twins, who had just been witnessing the scene, and he grabbed a safety ring before diving in as well. Lifeguards manifested themselves and went after both boys.
Danny swam at top speed with one direct goal--to reach the little boy that he and Dwight saw barely bobbing the water surface seconds ago.
Dwight swam at a desperate pace, going after his competitive swimmer of a schoolmate and the little boy whose head was barely even above water already, his little hands clawing at air and water. Shrieks sounded from the beach when people realized what had been going on.
Swimming furiously into the water, Danny made a last burst of speed and grabbed onto the child, pulling him up to the surface. The little boy was choked and spluttered, Danny holding onto him securely. "I've got you--!" Danny coughed. "I've got you, you're okay--!" The little boy coughed out some water and once his airway cleared enough, he began to cry, clinging onto the high schooler.
Dwight made it within distance to them and threw the ring at Danny. Danny swam to it and clung onto it, heading back to shore with the little boy, the lifeguards already out to meet them. Panting, he gave Dwight a nod as he did, and it was returned by his pale schoolmate.
The Dalton boys at the beach erupted into cheers as the two boys headed back to them looking flushed with exertion and shaken with effort. "Holy Castiel," Dwight sputtered as he swam with the two. Danny just kept careful hold on the little boy and patted him in comfort.
Upon reaching the people at the shallower waters, Danny carefully gave the little boy to the hands of the lifeguard that met them and smiled, looking shaken. He gave the boy's rushing parents a nod before he waded back to the direction of the other Dalton boys.
"I'll be damned," Charlie grinned as Dwight headed back to shore as well. The Windsors cheered and whistled as the Hanovers nearly tackled Danny onto the sand.
"Not bad for someone who doesn't like the beach," grinned Wes as Dwight finally made it back to them.
"We had no idea--!" Reed looked startled. "We didn't think anything was wrong, it's a good thing you both could tell!"
Dwight collapsed onto the beach mat again, facedown, swatting away the Windsors who were trying to celebrate him the way the Hanovers were already all but smothering Danny. "I'm going to sleep."
Blaine grinned down at him. "Rub some coppertone on him, wouldn't want him to burn up."
Fourth Of July
Spencer crawled under his bed and was screaming, "GET HER AWAY FROM ME, JUSTIN, DO SOMETHING, YOU'RE THE PREFECT!!"
Justin replied, "She is your sister. Besides, you should be enjoying the day with your fam--"
Danny then popped in and told him that Sydney was on the phone, but Spencer yelled, "I DO NOT EXIST."
Danny replied, "--so should I tell her you're indisposed?"
Spencer yelled, "I AM A ROCK. AN IMMOVABLE ROCK."
Justin spoke up, "Danny, just tell Sydney that Spencer is busy, er...meditating on the magnitude of this holiday."
So Danny agreed and left.
Jeff then peeked in and told Justin, "By the way, Windsor's outdone themselves this year."
Justin blanched and said, "Don't tell me--"
Oliver looked out the hallway windsor, "...impressive."
Justin grabbed his phone and hit speed-dial number 2 which called Charlie who answered with, "Whaddayawant?!"
"You guys swore that you'd never come near fireworks EVER AGAIN"
Charlie innocently replied, "When did we promise that...?"
"Oh cool your British pants, Hanover, we've got it under control. It's the FOURTH OF JULY. This demands fireworks."
"After what happened last year--"
"WE MAINTAIN THAT THAT WAS NOT INTENTIONAL."
"That crater is still there!! Landscaping hasn't even figured out how to fix that!!"
"YOU'RE NOT EVEN BORN OF THIS NATION, YOUR OPINION DOESN'T COUNT, SO SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE FIREWORKS." then Charlie hung up.
Justin groaned and dropped his head onto the desk.
Danny was staring out the window and saying, "That shipment's got to be in the metric tons."
Ollie took the binoculars from him and said, "And not even the premade ones... I didn't think it was legal to have that much potassium nitrate in a single shipment--"
Justin put his jacket on at that point and announced, "Well, I'm betting that's for the mad scientists and the Caterpillar to manage..."
Oliver kept looking out and said, "I can't identify the twine the twin boys are carrying."
Spencer then came over and told him it was cannon fuse so Justin said he was now going over there.
Oliver and Windsor
Spencer, Danny and Oliver were stopped when they were trying to leave Hanover one day. When Justin asked where they were going, Justin and Danny pointed to Oliver and they said they were taking him to Windsor. Merril asked why he was going there, and Oliver mentioned he'd been invited to joiin the science club.
Justin then said no, but Merril didn't see why he couldn't go. Spencer said that they were going along with him so they could curb any potential damage. Justin then told them to stay there while he called Charlie. Spencer glard at Danny and said, "I told you." but Danny just said it was worth a shot. Merril then gave Ollie a fresh scone and said it was good that he was making friends. Danny said there is nothing wrong with Windsor, and Wes was a Windsor.
Spencer then said, "Okay, I want you to hear yourself say that. Listen to yourself say it, go on." so Danny replied, "........okay, maybe I see your point." all while Ollie quietly ate his scone and waited. Justin on the phone was saying, "--and I want absolutely nothing incendiary near the three of them!" to which Charlie replied, "Oh for godssakes, Hanover, you're basically asking me to have them hold the meeting in Reed's room." Justin said that was a good idea but Charlie said he'd keep watch and not let them blow anything up.
Oliver then asked if they could go, and Justin told Spencer and Danny to go with him, make sure the Twins stay far away and don't let the Drew and Satoru feed him anything they made. Merril gave Ollie another scone and told him to have fun. Spencer grumbled about Windsors as they left.
Wes and Danny
In few, far between times, Wes wakes up to a ringing cell phone at 2am. It's always the same person, always for the same reason.
Wes would smile blearily.
"I'll be right out."
"...okay. ...and I--"
"I've banned the words 'I'm sorry' from you at 2am, remember?"
And Wes would grab his coat and slip on outside. Danny would be standing in the Windsor front yard with an awkward smile, shifting uncomfortably, and wearing a coat over his own pajamas.
They'd wander the grounds at that hour of the night - sometimes they'd even run into Derek who was sneaking in after some tryst with a Dobry girl, or maybe spot the Twins returning from another target setup. They'd walk and talk about things that had absolutely nothing to do with whatever reason drew Danny to call, and Wes often doesn't quit until he gets a laugh out of his friend.
It would be much later when Wes would walk Danny back to Hanover - sometimes, Spencer would be awake, waiting, expecting - and he'd nod at Wes with a smile when he handed Danny back to him. Danny would smile in that quiet grateful way and Wes would promise that he and David will sit with him at lunch later on.
And then he'd go back to Windsor. Merril often has a bit of cake or a pie to give Wes later in the day. It was a quiet thing, no one except David, the older Hanovers, and a handful other students knew it happened. Or that it keeps happening. And that it makes everything very very okay.
After he was helped back to recovery by the Hanovers, Danny started volunteering from time to time at the local community center (he also helps out at the counselor’s in school). He wanted to help others who had been just like him. He’d had to more than once run to the aid of someone who said their friend was in trouble for various reasons, that includes someone who’d tried to OD. He tries to read up and study these things so he’d be ready. Danny takes care of a curly haired four year old girl at the youth centre while her older brother does counselling. The little girl that Danny watches over is named Carrie - she's got green eyes and is really shy.
Danny volunteers to help troubled teens at the youth center. That includes teens who've fallen to some bad people. Danny got into the crossfire of something without knowing, and got roughed up. They had been waiting for Danny to come back before they sprung on him. Nicky saw and he called the seniors. Justin and Spencer went after the guys that hurt Danny and all hell broke loose. Spencer mostly hauled the guys off Danny and took him aside and Justin proceeded to beat the ever loving crap out of the guys who kept going at them. The ones who ran, he didn't follow. Hanover checked Danny over and he was fine. He had cuts and bruises, but luckily no broken bones.
